As cliché as it sounds, food has always been there for me. No matter where I go, the meals I consume are important to me. From Shanghai and Hong Kong to Copenhagen to New York and even right here in Chapel Hill, NC, food has meaning.

Food helps you understand a culture in a way that isn’t necessarily obvious. Beyond the type of food you are eating, the entire dining experience sheds light into the way people live. Whether I’m sitting at a huge round table in Shanghai passing dumplings via a Lazy Susan, or lounging in a Brooklyn park enjoying fried mozzarella, there is so much to take in about the local culture and people.

Yeah I value food, and sometimes obsess over it, but it’s not just because I love to eat and try new food, it’s because dining is an immersive cultural experience that is often shared with companionship.
